Josh Key

What first got you into music?

Oh fuck me, the first time I got an iPod, it was green silvery green iPod with white buttons on it that my mum and dad got me, and I played the most cringe pop music possible on that little iPod, and I was completely blown away on what music was, and I was fascinated from that point, and that’s all I wanted to do.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I don’t know; I guess it’s more about the strong emotions, the thought process and the words. You know all of that was put into it rather than the pretty melodies and you know the cliche beat drops and all this other just crap disposable crap now we’re more interested in rowing people up into trying to organise people you know and getting people to think about these things that be Everyday person will see on the news. You know, 20 minutes later, I’ll go back to the desk job and forget about it. You know, we’re interested in trying to break that cycle and redirect people into, you know, more exposed ways of living.

What’s the creative process for you in the band?

It’s odd; it’s not like any other band. You know, Kami’s lead singer and guitarist. She’ll write songs like the lead singer, you know, they right the lyrics they write the guitar parts they don’t write the drums that’s my job that stuff, but ultimately, I do the exact same, so I write some of well about half of the lyrics. I’ve written as well and a lot of the guitar stuff. I’ve, you know, I’ve helped Kami with and same with the bass parts, and you know I do the drums, so you know, it’s a mix of everyone, and it’s it is very, very democratic not to say there is an argument as always arguments, but that’s good. That’s how you write a song. It’s just it’s more, you know, oh it’s you know, it’s more like, oh well, I’ve written a song do you wanna hear it type thing, and we work out like that rather than the lead singer does the lead singer bit and the guitar guitarist but it’s all you know in bread into How we feel

If you could choose anyone, who would you most want to collaborate with?

Hard question, do you know what I don’t I don’t know I mean if anyone came up to me and was interested in the same things that I was interested in and had a similar thought process and I know I’ve vibe with then I’ll be interested in anyone you know that the offers and is it also interested in me I don’t think there’s one specific person you know I’m not gonna turn around and say oh I’d like to Collaborate with Ariana Grande or you know it’s just whoever is interested in us.

What’s your favourite song to perform?

At the moment, probably why just because I like the drums. I wrote the song, you know there’s a cool like Scaris sort of bit in the middle, and the drums for that are really good, and everyone else seems to really like the drums for that so I know that when I play everyone is paying attention to the drums which you know it doesn’t happen very often and I quite like it. It shows off my talent a little bit more than that song, but yeah

Would you say that was more challenging that you could enjoy and sit back and relax on challenging

It’s not as challenging as it used to be. You know, they all used to be challenging. You know we’ve spent like hours hundreds of hours trying to perfect these songs you know it’s just it’s not even that I can sit back fully and you know it’s just like I feel real, it feels good in my hands to play so I like doing it

If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

All of it does not there, not a single thing about the industry right now that I like it’s all about money and corporations and you know deals not necessarily record deals because that’s extinct but you know deals with promoters and deals with you know venue owners and it’s just it’s all really Uptight and it’s all messy you know it’s all made for money and it’s not made for enjoyment anymore even going and seeing you know a small band now they’ve been pushed around so much and you know that they’re running less than a pizza delivery guy you know

What’s next for you?

I’m not really sure; just experimenting on the kit. I’ve got the right new lyrics. You know, I haven’t written lyrics in quite a while. I’m looking at necessary instruments that I’m gonna play, the instruments that I’m gonna use within like intervals, and you know, sort of atmospheric stuff, you know, an element of you know, Latin and gospel, you know tribal music, you know, just stuff that isn’t usually in punk there should be That that’s where I’m taking this, so

Is it more about an experiment at the moment, then?

It’s not because I’m not gonna experiment like, you know, psychedelic rock type shit that was the hell out of me, but it’s more like I wouldn’t call it experimenting. I know I wanna do, you know it it’s it is processed. I thought about it a very, very long time. It’s just getting into just adding other elements of different genres into punk, you know, but I’ve heard from others, you know, very, very small bands and stuff. I think it’s quite cool and that could go somewhere.
